It remains impossible for a non-Mac virus to run on a Mac and send itself to addresses gathered in AddressBook. However, the Mac can very well transmit viruses, mostly to Windows machines, because it is easy to forward an email containing a virus which, unable to run on the Mac, will remain undetected (unless scanned by an AV that detects Windows viruses), but will contaminate the recipient if he is running Windows. Even when the "Macintel" switch takes place, these viruses will not run on OS X because its design is very different from Windows in many ways. exe executables aren't run by a Mac, but simply because a Windows virus is a tiny program designed to run under Windows on x86 (Intel, AMD etc.) processors, whereas the Mac uses PowerPC processors. However, being open source (Clam), it has no commercial intention, which can make it more reliable in a sense.ĭepending upon the virus, Macs can serve as "mass-mailers", which means the mac is not infected, but will pass the file into everyone in the address book and depending on the operating system could infect all of them.įor that to happen, it would require the virus to run, which is not possible, not because. Plus, it's not free, therefore ClamXav seems a better option to me, although some people find that its GUI is not very practical. Mac bundle, due to compatibility issues with Tiger (which have now be solved).
